Rocket Hardware Arrivals at Sea Launch Home Port
LONG BEACH, Calif., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Sea Launch is implementing long-term Sea Launch contracting initiatives with Sea Launch partner organizations for the on-time production and delivery of rocket segment hardware to meet current and future launch opportunities.
The first of a series of recent planned shipments of rocket segments for the Zenit-3SL system arrived at Sea Launch Home Port in August 2007. Some of this hardware supported the launch of the Thuraya-3 satellite in January, while other segments are designated to upcoming missions. In December, a Block DM-SL upper stage arrived at Long Beach Airport on a cargo plane from Moscow, as part of this momentum to support Sea Launch's 2008 manifest of 6 missions. Additional hardware deliveries are scheduled in the First Quarter to support missions later in the year.
Most of the segments for the Zenit-3SL rockets begin their journey in Dnepropetrovsk and Moscow, where they are manufactured, and are transported by rail to the Port of Oktyabrsk, Ukraine, on the Black Sea. Thirty-five days later, the shipments arrive in Long Beach, Calif., on the Condock, a roll-on/roll-off vessel based in Germany. The Sea Launch Logistics team unloads the rocket stages for storage in an on-site warehouse at Home Port. The Sea Launch team then draws from this inventory to assemble 3-stage vehicles as needed to meet manifest requirements. The Zenit-3SL includes the 2-stage Zenit-2S booster, built by PO Yuzhmash (Ukraine) and a Block DM-SL upper stage, built by RSC Energia (Russia). Sea Launch Company, LLC, based in Long Beach, Calif., offers the most direct and cost-effective route to geostationary orbit for commercial communications satellites. With the advantage of a launch site on the Equator, the robust Zenit-3SL rocket can lift a heavier mass or provide longer life on orbit, offering best value plus optimized spacecraft orbital delivery.
