Midwest Meets West Coast, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology to Open New Campus in Downtown Los Angeles
CHICAGO, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- After nearly 30 years of addressing the need for more professional psychologists in the Midwest, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology is taking its unique approach to psychology training to new frontiers. Starting in fall 2008, Los Angeles, Calif., will become home to the school's first out-of-state campus.

Keeping with the school's tradition of an urban setting, the campus will be located in downtown Los Angeles at 617 W. 7th St., strategically adjacent to the Pasadena Freeway, parking, and public transportation. The central location will allow the school to connect with service organizations and other training sites throughout the region. Overseeing the campus as dean will be Dr. Michele Nealon-Woods, a 2000 graduate of The Chicago School and outgoing chair of its Clinical Psychology Department in Chicago. Dr. Nealon-Woods sees the new campus as a natural extension of the school's mission, which emphasizes a commitment to diversity. "Look at how diverse the community is in Los Angeles," said Dr. Nealon-Woods. "The thought of being able to take what we have here--our mission, our passion, and our skills--to a new locality where the population is even more diverse than Chicago is inspiring. Serving diverse communities is literally central to what we do, and I want to be a part of that in Los Angeles." Four of the school's most successful programs will represent the initial L.A. offerings: Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology, M.A. in Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology, M.A. in Forensic Psychology, and the Applied Behavior Analysis Specialization of the M.A. in Clinical Psychology. Conversations about a West Coast presence began in spring 2007 after the school engaged in a successful self-study and site visit by the Higher Learning Commission, which resulted in The Chicago School earning a broadened scope of accreditation in the areas of psychology and related behavioral sciences. Soon thereafter a task force was convened by President Horowitz and Board Chair Richard Grunsten to examine the school's mission and current strategic plan and to determine the school's next steps. According to the task force, the school's vision to reach new populations stems in part from evidence of a growing need for psychology services and professionals across many communities. The National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that one in every four U.S. adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year but that only 7 percent actually receive help for these disorders. Most at risk people are those from medically- and educationally-underserved populations, the very people that The Chicago School is committed to serving in its mission.
