Cook County Treasurer's Office: With or Without Budget, Employees Will be on Duty

Pappas Says Her Office Will Be Open On Tuesday

CHICAGO, Feb. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today that her office will be open for business on Tuesday (March 4, 2008), the due date for current property tax bills, whether or not a new county budget is in place.

"We will have employees on duty to process payments on Tuesday, even if they are working without pay," Pappas said.

A shutdown of all or part of Cook County government was possible at midnight Friday (February 29) if a new budget for fiscal year 2008 is not approved by the Cook County Board.

Because Monday (March 3) is a holiday honoring Casimir Pulaski, the due date for first installment property tax bills for tax year 2007 is at the close of business on Tuesday.

"We'll be on duty, with or without a new budget," Pappas said.

Pappas said taxpayers can pay on time:
-- At some 300 Chase Bank facilities.
-- Online at cookcountytreasurer.com.
-- By direct debit at some 200 participating community banks.
-- Via mail postmarked March 4 or before.
