AJC Welcomes Third UN Security Council Resolution to Curb Iran Nuclear Program

NEW YORK, March 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Jewish Committee welcomes today's UN Security Council resolution aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear program. Resolution 1803 was adopted after Iran defied two previous Security Council resolutions.

"The measures adopted today can only be as good as the willingness of the international community to implement them," said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris.

Resolution 1803 provides for additional measures against Iran, including inspections of cargo to and from Iran that is suspected of carrying prohibited equipment, tightening of the monitoring of Iranian financial institutions and extending travel bans and asset freezes against persons and companies involved in the nuclear program. It adds names to the existing list of individuals and companies subject to travel and asset restrictions. It also bans all trade and supply of dual-use items, materials and technologies that can be adapted for military as well as civilian ends.

Iran has disregarded Security Council resolutions 1737 and 1747, both adopted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, thus undermining the authority of the Security Council as well the integrity of the international non- proliferation regime.

In view of Iran's intransigence, and the compelling threat it poses to international peace and security, AJC calls on the international community to be firm regarding Iran. Should Iran fail, once again, to comply with its international obligations, further measures should be considered.

AJC also calls upon the Security Council to be vigilant regarding the other threats posed by the Iranian regime to regional and world peace, such as its repeated calls to wipe Israel off the map, its pursuit of long-range missiles and its support of terror organizations. Indeed, these threats would be profoundly elevated were Iran to acquire nuclear weapons capability.
