Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson Honored With the Armed Forces Foundation Patriot Award
LAS VEGAS, March 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sheldon G. Adelson, Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE:LVS) chairman and chief executive officer, was presented with the distinguished Patriot Award at the 4th Annual Armed Forces Foundation Congressional Gala in Washington, DC last night. For his outstanding support of the armed forces community, Mr. Adelson was heralded as a patriotic American whose generous contributions to the military and their families go above and beyond the call of duty.
"It is so important to support our troops who are fighting courageously for all of us and assisting their families in a time of need is a great way for me and my family to show our appreciation," stated Mr. Adelson. "Mr. Adelson's prominence as a philanthropist coupled with his dedication and commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community, positions him to be a vital partner in serving our military troops and families," said Patricia Driscoll, President of the Armed Forces Foundation.
"Operation Oasis" was singled out as an example of how Mr. Adelson has helped. On August 5, 2007, The Venetian, a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands Corp., held a Military Appreciation Day. The free event offered an evening of entertainment and relaxation for the over 400 military families in attendance from nearby Nellis Air Force base. A number of different activities were available during the event, including arcade games, raffles, a NASA-provided authentic space suit, and several stations for children to experiment with air-powered finger and balloon rockets. In between the activities, guests were able to enjoy hamburgers, pizza and soda while enjoying live music provided by Nevada Congressman Jon Porter and his band. The Armed Forces Foundation Gala was attended by members of Congress, members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Department of Defense officials and 200 wounded troops from Walter Reed Army Hospital and Bethesda National Naval Medical Center. The event was hosted by Congressman Chet Edwards (Chairman Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee), Congressman Norman Dicks (Vice-Chairman, Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations), Congressman David Hobson (Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations), Congressman Jim Moran (Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations) and Congressman C.W. Bill Young (Ranking Member, Subcommittee on Defense Appropriations).
