Teamsters, EPI to Hold Conference Call on Impact of Cross-Border Trucking
Teamsters General President To Comment on Potential Damage of Opening Border Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa will discuss the costs of opening the border to trucks from Mexico on a confere He will be joined by Dr. Robert E. Scott, director of International Programs for the Economic Policy Institute, who will comment on the damage that NAFTA has caused.
The Monday morning conference call will precede a Tuesday Senate Commerce Committee hearing on the decision of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters to continue to open the borders to dangerous trucks from Mexico, even though Congress passed a law ending the program. The hearing will be held on March 11 at 2:30 pm in the Russell Office Building, Room 253. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is one of the nation's largest labor unions, representing more than 1.4 million workers. The Economic Policy Institute is a nonpartisan think tank that researches the impact of economic policies and trends on working people.
