The Imposter Phenomenon: Overcoming It to Keep Your Career on Track

WASHINGTON, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- You're fired! You're incompetent! You are a fraud and a fake. Did you really think you could fool people for the rest of your life? These are the words that many professionals fear most and tell themselves more often than they care to admit. It's called the Imposter Phenomenon (IP), a feeling high achievers experience when they deny that their accomplishments are "real." Instead, they attribute their success to luck, timing, and the generosity or oversight of others. This phenomenon is surprisingly common among high-level executives and others at the top of their professional careers.

It has been well documented that careers can be derailed as a result of IP symptoms. Swan Consulting Group, Inc. (www.swanconsulting.com), a Maryland- based executive coaching firm, is seeking 120 men and women to participate in a study to reexamine this phenomenon. Individuals who have experienced moderate to intense levels of IP are ideal candidates. Data will be collected on how sufferers recognize, cope and even overcome the phenomenon. Analyses will reveal the early warning signs that indicate the phenomenon is emerging, and provide effective ways in which to diminish or even extinguish IP symptoms.

"Our clients are asking that this kind of study be conducted due to their experiences with the phenomenon. We want to discover how IP affects men and women differently and what strategies we can recommend to overcome it," said Karen L. Pell, PhD, one of the three Swan Consulting associates leading this project. Susan M. Hahn, founder and president of Swan Consulting Group, Inc. and Susan L. Bindon, RN, round out the project leadership.

The goal of their project is to understand IP better and to develop coaching methods to assist individuals in overcoming it. The outcomes will assist those people who might otherwise be delayed or stymied in their careers in achieving their potential.

Persons who believe they are struggling with IP are encouraged to complete a ten-item, confidential, online survey at www.swanconsulting.com/IPsurvey.html. Selected candidates will be interviewed in person or by telephone. Following completion of the project, participants will be provided an advance copy of the published findings, as well as a list of resources to expand their understanding of IP and its impact on career and work performance.
