DNC: McCain Should Resolve Primary Problems Before Asking for General Election Funds
WASHINGTON, March 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Politico reported that John McCain's campaign has filed papers with the Federal Election Commission to create a separate fundraising account that would pave the way for him to accept public funds in the general election.
But, as the Democratic National Committee highlighted last month in a complaint with the FEC, McCain and his campaign have failed to answer critical questions about its decision to unilaterally withdraw from the matching funds program in the primary election. McCain's campaign has resorted to false and misleading spin, instead of answering questions from FEC Commissioner David Mason about loans that may have been secured by McCain's qualification for matching funds and his decision to rely on the matching funds program to get on the ballot in several states. "Why should the FEC, our candidates or the voters trust that John McCain would stay in the public financing system in the general election when he skirted the laws in the primary," said DNC Communications Director Karen Finney. "John McCain should resolve his issues with the primary funds program before he starts worrying about the general election."
