Governor Rendell and First Lady Invite Pennsylvanians to Tour Residence

HARRISBURG, Pa., March 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell and First Lady Marjorie O. Rendell invite the public to tour the Governor's Residence during the 2008 tour season.

"Midge and I welcome all Pennsylvanians to visit the Executive Residence and experience the rich cultural history within its walls," Governor Rendell said. "It is an honor for our family to live in the people's house and we invite you to share in the beauty of this magnificent Pennsylvania landmark."

The Georgian-style Governor's Residence, built in 1968 overlooking the Susquehanna River, was designed by architect George M. Ewing of Philadelphia. Governor Rendell and his family are the seventh family to reside there. Governor Raymond P. Shafer and First Lady Jane Davies Shafer, along with their youngest daughter, Jane, were the first. The Shafers established visiting hours in 1969; First Lady Ginny Thornburg enhanced the program in 1979 with the introduction of guided tours by professional docents.

Tours are open to the public at no charge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning April 1. Guided tours last 30 minutes and include a brief history and tour of the first floor and gardens.

Reservations are required and can be scheduled by calling 717-772-9130. The Residence is located at 2035 N. Front St., Harrisburg, and is handicapped accessible. Parking is permitted directly in front of the Residence on North Second Street.

The Rendell administration is committed to creating a first-rate public education system, protecting our most vulnerable citizens and continuing economic investment to support our communities and businesses.
