Lancaster Investments Show Pennsylvania's Range of Development Tools

LANCASTER, Pa., April 1, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania's wide variety of business enhancement and community revitalization efforts are bearing fruit in Lancaster County, Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Yablonsky said tonight while speaking to students at Franklin and Marshall College.

"State agencies have invested more than $225 million in Lancaster County since Governor Rendell took office," Yablonsky said. "Under the Governor's direction, Pennsylvania has helped companies as diverse in scale and scope as GlaxoSmithKline, Brubaker Farms, Auntie Anne's, and the Renaissance Faire, and we've provided resources to organizations like the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County and the Manheim Area Economic Development Corporation to make sites ready so businesses have a place to immediately expand or set up shop."

The secretary made his remarks to about 30 students who are enrolled in government classes at F&M. The college, itself, received a $10 million state grant to jump-start the development of the new Ann & Richard Barshinger Life Sciences & Philosophy Building, which was dedicated last fall.

State community revitalization programs, such as Main Street and Elm Street, have directed more than $400,000 to the City of Lancaster to make its streets safer and more attractive.

A substantial amount of the funding DCED allocates comes from Governor Rendell's economic stimulus plan. Since the plan was launched several years ago, more than $2.7 billion has been invested in more than 2,500 projects statewide, which have resulted in the pledging of more than 237,000 jobs.

The Governor's proposed budget provides additional resources to programs, such as the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program and Business in our Sites, to ensure future community and business enhancement projects get the funding they need.

"Lasting progress for Pennsylvania's businesses and communities isn't something that happens quickly, but we're starting to see it happen," Yablonsky said. "We've made tremendous strides over the past five years and we will continue to support projects so the commonwealth thrives in the years to come."
