WHY: Oregon's economy is driven in part by the tourism industry, which
generates $8.3 billion and accounts for 132,000 direct and
indirect jobs providing $3.3 billion in employee earnings. In an
independent 2007 survey, four of five Oregonians said they believe
the tourism industry has a positive impact on our quality of life,
and 95 percent said it's important to Oregon's economy.
The Governor's Conference on Tourism aims to unite industry
professionals with opportunities for education and collaboration.
HOW: Travel Oregon will launch a new effort to promote sustainable
tourism in earnest at this year's conference. By recycling all
name tags; purchasing "green power" through PGE and carbon offsets
through the Climate Trust, and by rewarding commuters who carpool,
ride bikes or take public transportation, Travel Oregon will
demonstrate ways that tourism partners and visitors alike may
strive to minimize environmental impact.
