Newsmaker Panel Discussion on Earthday: Protecting the Environment in Cities, the U.S., and the World Ben Grumbles, assistant administrator for water at the Environmental Protection Agency, will discuss Green Transportation, a single term for lots of different ways that cities can design roads, paved lots, etc. to prevent storm water run off. Some cities, like Portland, Ore., have embraced these strategies and cut storm water run off by more than 60 percent. Richard J. Baier, the director of transportation and environmental services for Alexandria, Va., will discuss that city's recent inventory of "green" projects and the plans to make Alexandria "go green." Marisa Vertress, an environmental policy analyst and social justice minister at St. Charles Borromeo church in Clarendon, Va., will discuss efforts various faith groups are making to protect the environment. For example, churches are reducing the energy they use to fund solar panels in African villages without electricity.
