'Wall Street Journal' and 'Reuters Television' Cover Iraq Vets for Congress in DC
WATCHUNG, N.J., April 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tom Roughneen, Republican candidate in the 7th Congressional District of NJ, brought together Congressional candidates from races throughout the country at the National Press Club on Monday afternoon. The common link between Matt Salisbury, running in Idaho, Duane Sand, running in North Dakota, and Vincent Micco, running against Steve Rothman in New Jersey, Kieran Lalor, running in New York and William Russell, running in PA against John Murtha, is that they are all veterans of the Iraq war and are 6 of the 17 who are candidates in House races this year. Reuters Television produced a report on the newswire about Roughneen, a 20-year Army Veteran, 10-year civilian prosecutor and short-lived military defense counsel to Guantanamo Bay detainee, Salim Hamdan. The Wall Street Journal also provided coverage in Tuesday's edition which can be found at: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120761362590096605.html.
Roughneen served in Iraq from 2003 to 2004 as a Special Operations Civil Affairs team leader. He continues to serve in the Army Reserve after 20 years as an Army JAG lawyer by "Defending Those Who Defend America." He was a founding member of the 501(c)(3), NJ Guard State Family Readiness Council in 2004, when he returned from Iraq. His deployment taught him that the financial and emotional difficulties imposed on National Guard and Reserve soldiers were fundamentally different than problems commonly experienced by the active duty soldier. Over $500,000 has been awarded, so far, with a one million-dollar fundraising campaign underway as 3,500 National Guard soldiers prepare to re-deploy. His two brothers are re-deploying this year. HumanEvents.com will detail each of the Congressional races involving Iraq veterans in a posting to occur Monday, April 14th. Former Marine Corps Corporal Kieran Lalor founded this organization and more information on the various candidates can be found at www.IraqVeteransForCongress.com. "We get it," says Roughneen. He added, "Few of us are trust fund kids. We joined the military because we were not well-off and the military provided a meaningful opportunity for us to both serve our country and earn money for college. Not only are we military experts, we are the candidates that understand the kitchen table issues facing Americans from coast-to-coast."
Iraq Veterans for Congress have all served in Iraq and witnessed democracy there in its infancy. They were a part of a commitment to serve in our nation's military and to be a part of something that was larger than themselves. Those types of experiences have forged Iraq veterans into leaders who are "fearless, tested and ready to lead." That is what it is going to take to overcome stalled partisan politics, reduce spending, commit to reduced business and personal taxes and keep America secure.
