Second Annual JetToy Olympics Slated for SAE 2008 World Congress

DETROIT, April 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 300 Detroit-area elementary students will show their engineering talents in the 2nd Annual JetToy Olympics at the SAE 2008 World Congress.

The JetToy Olympics, which is sponsored by Johnson Controls, will take place in Cobo Center-Michigan Hall from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16.

In the JetToy challenge, students make balloon-powered toy cars that meet specific performance criteria. Jet propulsion, friction, air-resistance and design are the core scientific concepts students explore in this challenge.

Students will be judged on criteria such as speed, accuracy, distance, time and weight-carrying abilities. Gold, silver and bronze awards will be presented.

Participating schools include:

-- Mae C. Jemison
-- John R. King Academic and Performing Arts Academy
-- Anna M. Joyce Elementary School
-- Golightly Education Center
-- Cooper Elementary School
-- St. Edith
-- St. John

More than 75 industry professionals will volunteer their time and talents for the competition.

JetToy is one of seven challenges in SAE International's A World In Motion(R) (AWIM) program. AWIM is a highly-interactive K-12 educational curriculum that brings math and science to life and has introduced more than four million students to rewarding engineering, science and technical career possibilities.
