Committee to Support U.S. Trade Laws (CSUSTL) Applauds Senator Clinton's Support of S. 974, The Stopping Overseas Subsidies (SOS) Act of 2007
WASHINGTON, May 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Members of the Committee to Support U.S. Trade Laws (CSUSTL) today welcomed the announcement by Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) that she has joined and added her support as a cosponsor of S. 974, the Stopping Overseas Subsidies Act of 2007, a bill introduced in April 2007 by Senators Evan Bayh (D-IN) and Susan Collins (R-ME).
The measure provides for the application of the countervailing duty laws (CVD) or anti-subsidy laws to imports from non-market economies. More specifically the measure will address the growing levels of illegally subsidized Chinese imports that continue to harm U.S. manufacturers and workers across the country. Roger Schagrin, Chair of the CSUSTL Government Affairs Committee and President of Schagrin Associates, Washington, D.C., said "this legislation was created to ensure that the countervailing duty laws (CVD) can be applied to imports from non-market economies, like China and because we all know that the Chinese Government has provided enormous illegal subsidies to their industrial and agriculture sectors." He added, "It is essential that we have support from Senators to advance this legislation and we are very pleased to learn that Senator Clinton has joined in this effort to fight unfair subsidies which continue to threaten thousands of companies and workers throughout America."
Added Will Boggs, Vice President of Allied Tube & Conduit, of Harvey, Illinois and Immediate Past Chairman of the Committee on Pipe and Tube Imports (CPTI), "today's announcement is extremely good news for our company and our hundreds of workers in the Hoosier State because we have worked tirelessly over the past two years to move this issue in Congress." He added, "Senator Clinton has made a commitment to ensure that we have essential tools to fight illegal subsidies and she has championed this issue through her work in the Senate Manufacturing Caucus and we thank her for this support." The measure is pending in the Senate and was referred to the Committee on Finance for further consideration. The CSUSTL will continue to work for passage of S. 974 in the 110th Congress.
