Election Win by Houston RNs Upheld
Vote Affirmed for Nation's Largest RN Organization First Texas Hospital where RNs win Union Representation HOUSTON, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Registered nurses at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital in Houston have won for a second time in their campaign to affiliate with NNOC Texas -- Texas affiliate of the National Nurses Organizing Committee/California Nurses Association, the largest and fastest growing organization of RNs in the nation.
A neutral third party arbitrator today overruled all objections filed by hospital administrators to the election win by the RNs in late March. The decision by arbitrator Diane Dunham Massey, which is final and binding, affirms Cypress Fairbanks as the first hospital in Texas where RNs have won union representation. NNOC Texas will represent nearly 300 RNs at the hospital, and the RNs have already begun work to negotiate their first ever collective bargaining contract to enhance standards for their patients and themselves, said NNOC/CNA in a statement today.

This is another banner day for Texas RNs and patients," said NNOC/CNA Executive Director Rose Ann DeMoro. "We nurses are pleased that these allegations have been overturned. We hope that the hospital turns the page, and we look forward to negotiating a great contract where we achieve a stronger voice for patient care," said Keith Merritt, an emergency room RN at Cypress Fairbanks. "Today's decision validates the victory of Cypress Fairbanks RNs in their historic election on March 28," said NNOC/CNA organizing director David Johnson. "This decision means that Cypress Fairbanks RNs can immediately begin to negotiate dramatic improvements in their conditions, and to build a strong RN union that will serve as a beacon to thousands of other Texas RNs. Their victory is celebrated anew by thousands of NNOC Texas members around the state, and is a national milestone in the movement to establish an unstoppable movement of direct care RNs to win better conditions for themselves and their patients," Johnson said.
