A Panel Discussion on
ARISE: Advancing Research in Science and Engineering

What has happened to America's position as one of the world's leaders in Science and Technology research? What are the problems and -- much more important -- what can be done about it?

An illustrious panel will present the findings of the ARISE report, a painstakingly prepared account of some of the problems and opportunities in this field. Focusing on early-career and high-risk, high-reward research, policy recommendations will be made for federal science funding agencies, universities, and private research institutes.

A question and answer session will follow the brief presentations by the following panel members:

-- Tom Cech, Nobel laureate and President, Howard Hughes Medical
Institute
-- Neal Lane, former White House Science Advisor and former Director,
National Science Foundation
-- Keith Yamamoto, Executive Vice Dean for Research, University of
California, San Francisco

Moderator: Eelco H. Dykstra, M.D., Professor of International Emergency Management, the George Washington University.
