Soles4Souls Inc., the Shoe Charity, Gives Away 65,000 Pairs of Shoes in Miami as Part of Barefoot Week

MIAMI, Fla. and NEW YORK, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Soles4Souls Inc., the international charity dedicated to providing free footwear to those in desperate need, announced on Monday that it donated 65,000 pairs of shoes to people in Miami. The donation is part of Barefoot Week, a series of nationwide events designed to increase participation with the charity's programs, and features donations of 325,000 pairs of shoes from Soles4Souls to needy residents in five U.S. cities.

"We are very excited to donate 65,000 pairs of shoes to people in Miami," said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. "This is the first of five large-scale footwear donations we are making this week within the United States. We are greatly encouraged by the number of individuals, businesses and houses of worship that are joining our mission to change the world one pair at a time," he said.

Other cities that will receive the same number of free shoes include Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, and the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservations in Arizona. The shoes are being distributed to people in need with the help of partner agencies, such as K.I.D.S. (Kids In Distressed Situations).

Elsey Receives Award in NYC

Wayne Elsey found himself on the receiving end of an award this week, when Waste Not-Want Not, an enterprise of 23rd Street Community Projects, announced that is has presented him with the Humanitarian Award of 2008. The award was given Monday night in New York City at a unique Soles4Souls shoe collection event at the Eneslow retail store.

Eneslow, the Foot Comfort Center, has long been a supporter of the mission of Soles4Souls. Other sponsors of the award dinner include The Clarks Companies, N.A., Springboost, and the New York State Podiatric Medical Association.

Soles4Souls Mourns Passing of Friend Bo Diddley

Soles4Souls staff and supporters are also mourning the passing of Bo Diddley, legendary rhythm and blues singer, who died of heart failure on Monday, June 2. In January of 2007, Diddley played a benefit concert for Soles4Souls in Las Vegas. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends," said Elsey. "He was an incredible musician and a wonderful man, and he will be greatly missed."
